Galson Sciences Limited (GSL) is a specialist nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management consultancy, based in the UK with an international client base including industry, government and international organisations. Our commitment to quality is demonstrated by our accreditation to ISO 9001:2000.

Site characterisation and risk assessment

We have extensive experience of site characterisation and risk assessment in support of contaminated land management and the development of radioactive waste disposal facilities:

  • Production of site characterisation plans
  • Development of monitoring plans and programmes
  • 3D structural interpretation linked to groundwater flow model (GEOMASS/FracAffinity), supported by 3D geological (EarthVision) and engineering (Vulcan) software
  • Groundwater flow and contaminant transport modelling using FEFLOW and MODFLOW, and supporting software
  • Radiological risk assessment calculations using GoldSim-RT and other performance assessment (PA) tools
  • Human health risk assessment, including generic (GQRA) and detailed (DQRA) quantitative risk assessments
  • Risk assessment of the water environment (e.g., DQRA using R&D P20)

On behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (as part of its Direct Research Portfolio), GSL is currently developing methodologies required for long-term monitoring of nuclear licensed sites, and is also developing a toolkit for improved sampling and interpretation of analytical data for such sites.

Decommissioning and radioactive waste management

GSL provide solutions to a wide range of radioactive waste management and decommissioning problems including inventory audits, integrated waste strategies and studies for waste conditioning, packaging, transport, storage, and disposal. We have extensive experience of organising Best Practical Environmental Option (BPEO) studies for nuclear waste management and decommissioning programmes, facilitating workshops, and providing advice on stakeholder engagement.

We have extensive knowledge of radioactive waste management programmes worldwide, and over the last 20 years staff have contributed to radioactive waste management programmes in Belgium, Finland, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. We have supported the development of geological and near-surface radioactive waste disposal facilities in the following areas:

  • Probabilistic and deterministic radiological risk assessments (PAs)
  • Production of environmental and post-closure safety cases
  • Development of Requirements Management Systems (RMS)
  • Criticality assessments
  • Development of Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) for near-surface disposal facilities
